Body of a Ford Focus (kinda) and the heart and soul of a GT-R. Well, this Australian effort comes out of Pace Innovations who works in a number of different genres, ranging from Australian V8 Supercars, to Rally-Raid style trucks, to hillclimb cars to side by sides.
This car has over 800HP and weighs just over 2,000 pounds and was originally designed to break hillclimb records in Australia. Now it has bee brought over here to compete in one of the oldest and most prestigious events we have. It will be competing against about 11 other competitors in the Unlimited class including another Nissan GT-R.
It doesn't appear that anyone is set up this year to challenge Sebastian Loeb's all time record set in '13 but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Electric Vehicle (modified) record of 9:07 fall to Rhys Millen and the Electric Vehicle (production) record of 12:55 fall to Blake Fuller and his Tesla S P90D.
Oh...and I'm so hoping the Jeff Denmeade's Time Attack 2 class Mitsubishi Evo effort blows up or is totaled in some catastrophic fashion. Not enough bad things could happen to him in this event for my liking.

Introducing the New 2015 Nissan Frontier!
Yup...this is it. While the rest of the world will get the Frontier that was shown a few months back as the next generation Navara and will be produced in Thailand for distribution for 43 other countries, THIS will be the Frontier that we will see here in the States.

With tons of torque immediately on demand thanks to its electric motor and no use of gasoline this will be the perfect work truck for your local plumber and electrician. Plus it makes a great looking little beach truck for surfers and hipsters everywhere. Can't wait to get my hands on one!

Dakar Vets Bring New Electric Tesla To Pike's Peak...
After finishing the '12 Dakar and becoming the first electric (at least in part) vehicle to do so the OSCar eO team turned its attention to North America. In '13 they brought a custom electric hillclimb car and did not have the best of luck...You can see the recovery of the vehicle in the video below:
Not willing to give up on finishing Pike's Peak, they have returned in '14 with a new vehicle. This time the platform is that of a Tesla Roadster--a car known more for looking incredible than performing incredibly. The OScar eO team has replaced the stock Tesla driveline with a more powerful, liquid cooled, electric motor but remains RWD and is now motivated by a 360kW twin motor system (equating to 500 HP) and a 40 kWh battery pack and an overall weight of 1060 kg.
This will be the Tesla platform's major motorsports debut though it is not likely to take a win within its electric vehicle division as it will be running in what is essentially an unlimited class due to the drivetrain change. The class itself seems to be growing annually and now is up to seven entries including two production models (Honda Fit EV and Toyota Rav4 EV) and multi time Pike's champion Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima. 2016 Nissan GT-R Rendering Leaked...
Looks like a Japanese magazine has leaked an early rendering of the 2016 Nissan GT-R which is reportedly to be the first major reworking of the supercar since its introduction a few years back. Receiving a hybrid powerplant though still containing a twin turbo V6 the new GT-R will retain its sub 3 second 0-60 time and its off the line torque should be incredible given the now part time electric powertrain.
That said, if this a true depiction of the next GT-R, it has gotten REALLY ugly in my mind...looking a bit like an elongated Mitsubishi Eclipse, all its little wiggles and bumps are not appealing. Here's hoping they flatten some of this out...

Tesla Model S Completes Coast to Coast Winter Trip...

Calling it a "rally" is a bit much but this two car team did just complete a crosscountry trip in a pair of Model S Teslas using only the Tesla Supercharger network for power/recharging. No ancient decayed dinosaurs were used to fuel this process (well...not directly anyway!!)
They set at least one "record" in the process including " fastest trip across the US in an electric vehicle". The vehicles reported no mechanical or electrical issues and drove through the snow, sleet and ice without a hiccup...
The final checkin for the team was in NYC and included a photo op with Mr. Elon Musk.Tesla S team completes cross-country trip in winter...

Next Nissan Frontier to be a Diesel?? Or a Hybrid??
Sure sounds like it according to Fred Diaz who is head of US sales. All powertrains are under consideration and given that Nissan has moved to put a diesel in the 2016 Titan would it surprise anyone if a smaller diesel ended up in the next generation Frontier?
Unchanged in terms of basic body design and powertrain options since its introduction as a 2005 model, the Nissan Frontier saw one of its best years of sales in 2013 with over 60,000 units sold in the US. Worldwide the Navara is also a successful model but one that comes with a turbo diesel engine not available here. Though the Truck Trend article mentions that they test drove just such a model at the Nissan 360 event in California in 2013, I wouldn't anticipate that this exact engine would end up in a US version of the next Frontier. This engine has been in use for these past near 10 years and any updated Frontier would likely receive an updated and more efficient engine as well. The suggestion of a small Cummins diesel is an exciting proposition
The more interesting possibility is that of a hybrid option. Nissan likes to be seen as an innovative company on the cutting edge of automotive options--the first mini-pickup in the US, first truck with a crew cab option, first mass market all electric with the Leaf, etc. So it wouldn't shock me to see Nissan be the first to offer a hybrid small pickup or perhaps a hybrid turbo diesel? Or perhaps the "First Manufacturer to offer a Cummins diesel in a Mid-Size truck"??
In any case, the next Frontier is likely to stay "about" the same size as it is today given it will still need to differentiate itself from the new Titan though, as with the current version, the two models will see a number of identical parts--axles, hubs, frame, etc. to curb costs. With the Titan rounding into its final form before its introduction to the world in less than a year, the next Frontier is definitely entering the design phase as we speak.

Tesla Model X Testing Spy Shot
The Tesla Model X with its Falcon Wing doors should be introduced to the world as a production vehicle next week at the Detroit Auto Show. Testing of it however is continuing in real world conditions and some lucky West Coast enthusiasts are seeing them out on the streets.
This one was spotted in Culver City, CA. As Culver City is quite a distance (370 odd miles) from the Tesla plant in Fremont, CA, this vehicle isn't on some sort of quick trip around the block and back so it is likely a very close to production version. Perhaps even an early demo given to some Hollywood muckity muck who was supportive of Tesla early on?
Regardless we should be seeing more and more of these out in public. It will be interesting to see if the same powerplant and batteries as the Model S can provide the same mileage and overall performance in the Model X--particularly when the soccer moms get a hold of it and stuff it full of kids and luggage--something that hasn't been a problem to date in the Model S.

Nissan Leaf vs. Datsun 240Z Drag Race...
Here's a matchup that no one has been asking for!! But then again...any opportunity to watch a 240Z is a good opportunity. I won't surprise you with the ending but hearing that the 240Z went from 0-60 in some 9.4 seconds makes me feel a whole lot better about schlepping around in my 4cyl Camry every day! Now if the Camry was about 1500 pounds lighter and ditched the grandma styling I might be getting somewhere!!

2014 or 2015 Nissan Titan to Go Hybrid?
Nah, I doubt it at this point--at least not in the first versions to be released but there is now speculation out there as to the next generation Titan getting a hybrid powerplant at some point in its lifetime.
To me there are too many drawbacks (high cost, unproven design, market desire, etc., etc.) for Nissan to step into this area with its next Titan. Given the minuscule portion of the market Nissan currently grabs in the truck market, stepping full into this arena seems a tad risky. The market hasn't even shown that they want/trust Nissan with their truck buying dollars so why go way off the deep end with a hybrid/electric full size truck.

The benefits of having the electric driveline (MPG, instant torque, something new in the market, etc.) are certainly there but I'd prefer an efficient and less expensive diesel option to any hybrid. Nissan does have a hybrid Pathfinder coming as well as a hybrid M35h but both are "car" based applications and not exactly heavy duty platforms. As we get ever closer, I am hoping for more and more tidbits to be revealed. So far, Nissan hasn't tipped their hand.

Finally...
Nissan returned again to the NAIAS this week with a big display.
Nissan introduced the concept vehicle for the next generation Murano--the Resonance, showing off an even more swoopy design with a roof that appears to "float". The rear looks a bit like the Lexus RX series from the side in my opinion. The design doesn't look like that much of a departure from the current Murano to turn off may buyers so this looks like another win for Nissan.
Secondly Nissan introduced the new Versa Note. Just called the Note in other markets this little hatchback will be priced in the low teens, get 40 mpg and be manufactured in Mexico.
The other news is that Nissan continues to confirm the production of a small (read sub-Z, sub-GT-R) sportscar. It confirmed to Car and Driver that the design will be of a "love it or hate if" variety (something as radical as the Juke it sounds like) and the "concept" upon which the model will be based, will be released in the next twelve months. Nissan also stated that it would be a "guilt free" car which in Nissan's world means an electric powertrain (or hybrid?). Personally I can't wait. A Nissan sportscar that might be cheap enough to convince my wife would be a great next car for me can't be beat.

SpaceX Grasshopper Test Video
SpaceX continues its march forward.
While its commercial flights servicing both governmentall and private business demands via its standard launch systems it is also working hard on its Grasshopper program which will eventually (hopefully) result in a completely vertical take off and landing program designed to return the launch vehicle to its launch site autonomously upon completion of its mission.
SpaceX has been ramping this program up bit by bit with short test flights. This most recent test took the Grasshopper up to 12 stories and then returned to its platform. Its funny to watch as at any moment I expect the rocket to turn sideways and explode as was often the case with many Nazi and Soviet (and a few US) launch attempts when they were first starting out. It almost seems unnatural for a rocket to not either shoot skyward or else end in disaster. Watching it land on its gear so softly and without a fuss is an odd thing.
The ability to return to its launch facility in this manner is designed to cut costs and increase the speed at which launches can occur--a necessary step for sending large amounts of equipment, supplies and people to Mars.
