New Zealand Off Road Racing

I thought as my first post up on here that i would do a break down of the various classes that run over here in New Zealand . All the photo's I've posted are old photo's over the years.

First things first the buggy classes

Class 1

Class 1 are unlimited buggy's they have to have IRS and the engine has to be behind the driver, however engine size is unlimited and turbo and supercharging is allowed .

Class 3

Class 3 or Super 1600 are unlimited in terms of suspension and frame design however they are only allowed a natural aspirated engine that's 1600cc in capacity

Class 5

Class 5 or Super 1300 are similar to class 3 but however they have to run a 1300cc engine

Challenger

Challengers are a controlled class they have to run original VW beetle suspension and VW 1600 flat four and gearbox the engine's are modified but have to run a single carb .

That's the buggy's out of the way i will follow this post up with a break down of the truck classes

Thanks for reading

Cheers,

Glen Sandford

Raana Horan's Winch Challenge Patrol...

This is the second of Raana Horan's Nissans and though this one isn't built for speed it is damn tough. As a competitor in a number of New Zealand winch challenge events the Patrol has nearly no equals. Love the mud in these pictures. Sure we get mud here in the Northeastern U.S. but not like this...and not with palm trees in the background.

Basic stats on this winch challenge Patrol:
Vehicle: Nissan Patrol GQ
Engine: Nissan 4.2 turbo diesel running 22 lbs. of boost and a modified fuel pump
Body/Other: factory rear diff lock, cut and tray back, exo-cage, shortened wheel base

Again, if anyone has any questions, please let me know and I will attempt to get them answered from Raana himself.

Meet Our New Correspondent...

Glen Sanford is his name and he hails from New Zealand. Given the quality of off-road racing in New Zealand (Taupo, Woodhill, etc.), the great terrain they have and how overlooked it likely is, adding a New Zealand perspective (different from that of mainlanders across the Tasman Sea) to the site. Welcome aboard Glen!

I'll put it out there as well--If you are interested in writing and promoting the site, please let me know. As long as you are passionate about motorsports and life in general I'd love to hear from you and add your perspective to the site (especially if you can shine a light on some of the more overlooked aspects or underappreciated drivers/manufacturers).

Oh, and if you're wondering what the above symbol is...its the "Fighting Kiwi" of course!!

Big Black I--Raana Horan's Race Patrol...

Raana Horan of New Zealand is a die hard Nissan afficianado. He is now on at least his third vehicle built for competitions of various kinds and all three of his most recent have been Nissans. All black ones too!

The vehicle here is Raana's first race vehicle dubbed "Big Black I" which has competed in numerous events in New Zealand including the well known Taupo 1000 and Woodhill 400. I will attempt to get more info about this vehicle and Raana's other two Nissans which I will post over the coming days.

Let me know if you have any questions you'd like to pose about either this vehicle or the others to come and I will see if I can get them answered from Raana himself.

Here are the basic stats on this one:

Nissan Patrol GQ
Supercharged VH45 V8
Computer--Link G3
Body--Wheelbase has been reduced in connection with cage build

Over/Under--the Word "Unprecedented" in Obama's Speech...

Just wanted to put out the "official" line on the number of times President Obama will use the word "unprecedented" in his Oval Office speech tonight. Given his and his speechwriters seeming desire to portray everything that has happened during his presidency as unique, one time only disasters of a magnitude only he has been forced to deal with, the word has been far over exposed to the point of now being meaningless.

I am putting the over/under on its use at 5 times. If his over use of the word had not been so well documented in the past six months I would have gone higher. As well as counting the number of times he uses the word I will also be drinking one beer for each usage, both in preparation for tonight's Celtics-Lakers game and as the only way to not slit my wrists in viewing Obama's blabbering...

Someone Teach the Nissans How to Finish!

My goodness...

Someone, somewhere needs to tell Nissan drivers across the Globe that you can't win or even represent your team at the finish line---WITHOUT FINISHING!!

Another event come and gone, another solid performance dashed near the end due to readily avoidable mistakes. I think I am beginning to attribute these mistakes to under experienced drivers in vehicles they don't fully understand. As Nissans are not part of any factory effort yet make solid performing privateer vehicles they are frequently used in "arrive and drive" scenarios where a well heeled, somewhat talented, but grossly inexperienced driver gets behind the wheel for his/her shot at a big time event. I believe that is what may have happened here.

After the first few stages of the Estoril-Portimao-Marrakech event the Nissan Pathfinder of Helder Oliveira had performed very well and sat in 5th place through the end of the 7th (of 10) stage. As we have seen in a number of Nissan efforts lately, things fell apart quickly as Oliveira rolled the Pathfinder a number of times in Stage 8, totaling the vehicle and ending their event.

The rally win eventually went to Leonid Novitskiy and his BMW X3 who showed his talent in the desert sand of Africa, overtaking Felipe Campos who was leading the event through the tighter stages in Portugal. Eric Vigouroux took third in his American Chevrolet Silverado, also showing his excellent desert skills as he leapfrogged a number of competitors once the event entered North Africa.

No pictures of any Nissans in this post as none deserved any further mention from this event...

STPR: Great Variety of Vehicles...

One of the best reasons to be a fan of grassroots Rally racing--

You simply will not find a larger variety of makes, models and manufacturers in any motorsport anywhere. If you are a fan of a particular manufacturer or even a specific model, chances are you can find someone to cheer on. Just take a look at this past weekends Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally in Pennsylvania. The variety of vehicles on hand was amazing. New to old, 2WD to 4WD, foreign to domestic, car to truck it was nearly all there.

Enjoy the shear variety of vehicles...

Oh and don't blink or you might miss Ken Block...god knows he's due to total his vehicle again any minute now....jeesh...Could ya finish a darn event already??

Rally TT Vodafone Estoril-Portimão-Marrakech--AFRICA!

So the event has now crossed into Africa. Gone are the tight and twisty WRC style stages and now the competitors are into true African desert terrain.

Speaking of competitors, the numbers of those still running are getting lower and lower...Attrition is now at near 50% with only 20 of the originally 39 entrants in the top class beginning Stage 6 with 4 long stages to go. Good news for our Nissan Pathfinder of Helder Oliveira as he continues to run strong and sits in third overall, 17 minutes ahead of 4th and 22 minutes out of first. The American made Silverado of Eric Vigoroux is more in its element here in the desert, finishing 2nd on todays stage and has moved into 5th overall.

Supercharged V-8 Nissan Titan Wins Woodhill 100...

Now THAT'S a Nissan Titan...

Powered by a supercharged VQ56 this Nissan Titan of Raana Horan became the first 4WD vehicle to ever win the Woodhill 100, one of the oldest and toughest races around. The race is usually dominated by buggies of one kind or another but Raana has been making inroads into their territory over the past year or so with his massive Titan. Below is the press release on Raana's win as well as links to a number of short videos of the Titan in action during the event, love the sound of that supercharger on that engine, unlike anything I've heard here...

The punishing 175 km endurance race is rated the toughest in the sport in this country. The event celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and is believed to be the only New Zealand motorsport event to have been run in the same location throughout its duration. Through the past 29 years, the race had only ever been won by specialist “space framed” offroad race cars.

Horan qualified on pole and leapt into the lead with a dominant start, launching the massive Nissan Titan utility down the short straight to the “holeshot” first corner.

He was chased hard as the field entered the forest by Whakatane’s Malcolm Langley, who hung off the big Nissan’s rear bumper in his Mitsubishi EV0 VII engined Bakersfield single-seater. Hawkes Bay driver Shayne Huxtable followed Langley in his Nissan turbo-powered car.

The only truck able to stay with Horan and the leading bunch was the rear wheel drive Nissan of Gary Baker, who was fourth overall.

As the field emerged from the first 28 km lap, Horan was in control, throwing the big truck into corners as if it were a rally car half its size. He led Langley by 20 seconds. Missing from the front-running bunch was Huxtable, whose Nissan engine had exploded at half distance.

Baker was up to third, chased by west Auckland driver and race organiser Donn Attwood in his Bu-Mac RV Toyota Super 1600. Kumeu driver Rene Sciarone was fourth, driving a Chenowth Toyota as part of the two-car Pinepac team.

Disaster struck the Baker team just four kilometres into the second lap when the Camp Quality Nissan Navara V8 hit a tree and rolled, partly blocking the track in the process.

The race was stopped while the stricken truck was pulled back onto its wheels and recovered from the forest. Both Baker and navigator Mark Hobson were shaken but unhurt.

At the re-start, Horan once more swept into the lead and was never headed. Once he had established the pace needed to stay in front, Horan drove for the finish, using his mirrors to maintain a gap over Langley in second. Rene Sciarone had moved through to third, the best of the local “gang of four” Super 1600 entries that had aimed to dominate the race.

Deep in the forest, the punishing sand tracks were exacting a toll on competitors and cars. Among many to become bogged or damage their cars were Richmond Autos Class Five front-runner Phil Finlay of Pukekohe, who suffered a total of three flat tyres during the race; AFWE production truck racer Anthony Hewitt, who found his big Dodge Ram stuck behind a smaller, slower production-class truck in the rough going; and Hamilton driver Paul Smith who suffered a flat tyre and arrived back at the pits running on a bare front wheel rim.

Aucklander Mike Gibson smashed his front suspension – one of many to do so as the Woodhill exacted its customary heavy toll on the field.

Horan had lapped several back-markers and was clear of Langley as the field entered the final lap, Langley grappling with a slipping clutch that forced him to drive on part throttle.

On that final lap, the deeply rutted sand tracks decided the end of the race. So many lower-order cars had become bogged in the tight sections that when the bunch arrived there was no viable way through. After attempting to winch some of the cars clear, organisers decided to declare the race and redirect the field to the start-finish compound.

Winner of AFWE ThunderTruck and outright winner Raana Haran said the Woodhill was the one race he has wanted to win ever since first hearing of the sport.

“Today was just sensational, and it was great to be the one to finally put a truck on the top step of the winner’s podium.”

Behind him, Malcolm Langley was second overall and won Southern Lakes Transmissions class one. He is vowing to overcome the car’s clutch woes and go head to head with Horan’s Nissan at coming rounds of the championship.

“We were staying with Raana okay even when the clutch as slipping; for the last half of the race I could only use part throttle or the clutch would just slip, so I know we are well on the pace.”

Third overall and first in BigPosters class three was Rene Sciarone, who says third place “will do” for this year. He still has his sights set on a win at Woodhill and points out the race is won as much by good fortune as by driving skill and car preparation.

AFWE production truck honours went to Auckland’s Anthony Hewitt in his Dodge Ram 4X4 ahead of Nigel Newlands of Hamilton. The win also hands Hewitt the class lead in the national championship.

Gary “Gunna” Scott was another local driver to score well, winning AFWE Sport Truck class for improved four wheel drives and utilities in his Mitsubishi Pajero Evo.

Racing for event sponsor Denny’s New Zealand, Darryn Bell of Muriwai brought his TVR-engined Range Rover home first in AFWE class six for Challenge Trucks. He said though he had been driving “ten tenths” for most of the race the Range Rover had only stepped off line once, its four wheel drive drawing it back onto the road and away from the ever-present trees.

Drury racer Nick Hall was first in Richmond Autos Class Five after a race-long battle with Pukekohe’s Phil Finlay.

Experienced racer Geoff Matich added another class win to his career tally, taking out V-Dub Shoppe Challenger class for cars with VW 1600 flat four engines.

Confounding predictions that his Subaru Leone – “Heidi the Paddock Car” would become stuck in the deep ruts of the sand tracks, Hamilton racer Simeon Gilbert brought the rough but ready racer home to win V-Dub Shoppe class nine.

But the weekend belonged to Raana Horan, who now takes over the ThunderTruck class lead for the national championship and also leads the North Island ThunderTruck class points race.

Rally TT Vodafone Estoril-Portimao-Marrakech 2010, Day 2...

Now through the end of SS 4 and 378km into the race the rate of attrition has picked up. 39 entries began the event in the premier class and now only 31 remain. While Felipe Campos remains in the lead with his BMW X3 and Leonid Novitskiy has moved into third in his X3, Helder Oliveira has grabbed 2nd overall in his Pathfinder. Helder now runs 12:12 behind Campos and 10:51 ahead of Novitskiy thanks to Eric Van Loon missing a major turn and Miguel Barbosa had engine problems. Eric Vigouroux has continued his solid pace and sits in 6th in his American made Chevrolet Silverado as he hopes to make up time in the desert terrain of Africa which should favor his vehicle. Fingers crossed for continued luck for Oliveira as Nissan could certainly use a solid result in this event!

Rally TT Vodafone Estoril-Portimao-Marrakech 2010

Replacing the annual Rally Transiberico the Rally TT Vodafone EPM is organized by the Automotive club of Portugal and represents the crux of the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies season and one of the longest, most high profile rallies this side of the Dakar. Looking at the previous winners of this event one can see how influential this event has been (Jean-Louis Schlesser, Ari Vatanen, Ginel de Villiers, Carlos Sainz, Luc Alphand, Guerlain Chicherit, and Carlos Sousa).

Its first few stages began today in Portugal and the race will eventually cross into Africa for four days of racing there. All told the event will cover a route of some 3000 kms and some 1800 kms in special (racing) stages (1,100 miles) with much of that distance crossing the desert terrain of Morocco.

With 43 entries in the "auto" class there are a number of world class entries including Felipe Campos in the X-Raid BMW X3, Eric Van Loon in the JMB Stradale Mitsubishi Racing Lancer, and Eric Vigoroux and his American made Chevrolet as well as a host of Nissans.

Day one contained a short "super special stage" of only 3.81 km and then a longer "special stage 2" of 170.88 km. Through the end of SS2 Felipe Campos and his factory supported BMW X3 are in the lead, in front of Eric Van Loon and his Mitsu Lancer by 4:38 and by 5:51 over the top Nissan (in third so far), a Pathfinder of Helder Oliveira while Eric Vigoroux sits in 5th 10:04 back of Campos.

Will have more updates tomorrow...

VW Coming to WRC in 2011...

OK...its not confirmed but this brief interview with the FIA President Jean Todt leads me to that conclusion...

Some facts we already know about VW:

1) They are currently in a super-aggressive phase of buildout, trying to become THE dominant auto manufacturer in the world with plans on massively increasing their sales volume in numerous key markets
2) They are not shy about coming into a motorsport arena and attempting to dominate it through shear monetary clout (see Dakar)
3) The WRC fits the bill of a motorsport series that focuses on small cars, which are VW's bread and butter and the backbone of VW's increasing volume

On top of that you have a number of VW connected individuals who are advising Todt on the direction to take the WRC including Carlos Sainz (current VW factory driver for the Dakar) and Michele Mouton (factory Audi WRC driver from the 80's). Todt also decries the fact that the WRC is dominated by only two manufacturers (Ford and Citroen).

There have been numerous rumors over the past few months that VW was looking into various motorsports be it F1 or otherwise for the 2011 season...If I had to bet on where VW will end up funnelling its money for a factory effort...I'd bet on the WRC...

Now THIS is Old School...

Gotta credit my father for this one. Knowing my interest in Nissans he came across this picture and forwarded it to me from one of his military history books. As the caption states this is a 2.5 ton Nissan 80 truck used during WWII and was the first mass produced truck in Japan. Also with the anti-aircraft weapon in the rear it shows that Japanese trucks have been used to create what in known in modern military parlance as a "technical" for more than 60 years and is not a creation of Afghanistan/Somalia/Iraq/etc.

Popular Mechanics Weighs In...

on the Juke...

Boy, Nissan must have been escorting all the media types around LA in the past week. Popular Mechanics is now in with its first look. Again, a big thumbs up and kudos to its driving characteristics. Sounds like Nissan may have a media darling on its hands!

Motor Trend's Juke Quickie...

And now it's Motor Trend's turn...

Just out a few minutes ago, Motor Trend continues the positive reviews of the Juke driving experience. All reviewers appear to be impressed with the AWD system on the Juke and its driving/handling characteristics. Styling is the big hangup that most commenters on these reviews have though all the industry reviewers seem to think it is a hit or miss proposition and not solely a "miss" as some would have you believe...Read on...

Another Nissan Juke Review--Inside Line This Time...

Now its Edmunds Inside Line's turn to do a quick review of the Juke. A bit more lengthy and informative than yesterday's review it sounds like Nissan took a bunch of auto journalists out and around L.A. in the past week. Both reviews mention driving up Mulholland Drive and I wonder if Nissan kept them to a perscribed route...

Regardless, as many have said this article mentions that the Juke is much better looking in person than in pictures and I couldn't agree more having been around it in person myself. It also mentions what I think is this vehicles best attribute--its engine. Its 180HP outperforms my wife's Altima, my '00 Xterra and my '09 4 banger Frontier. Combine that with decent torque and its light weight and the Juke should be a blast to drive and possess some great tuning opportunities (increasing boost, etc.). Overall it is another positive review for the Juke. Well done Nissan...

Autoweek Has First Juke Testdrive...

or at least the first one I've seen...and its not exactly comprehensive. It sounds like Nissan gave them about 10 minutes to take the Juke for a spin before demanding it back. Unknown even is if this is the true U.S. version or still the right-hand drive model that Nissan has been trailering around the U.S. over the past five months. Still it gives a number of decent first impressions on it--CVT=Bad, torque and AWD=good. I can't wait to get my hands on one...Now if I can convince the wife to trade in her Altima for one....
